Sunday 8 January 2006. Mince Pie Ride.
Weather today was dry early on but then started raining about 9.30 and was wet the rest of the day with moderate continuous rain over the middle of the day.

We met for coffee, mince pies and a table full of food at Phil and Mary’s house in Runcton. When I rode up from Pagham the rain was very light. Gradually more people arrived until we had a record turnout of 36. A few arrived by car but most came by bike.

We enjoyed the warmth of the log fire, the conversation and the food as the rain grew heavier outside. The original plan was to go to the Winterton Arms for lunch and then Avryl’s in Tangmere for tea and more mince pies. However as the Pub and Avryl’s are fairly close there didn’t seem a lot of point in this with the weather so bad so we stayed on with Phil and Mary until 12.30 and then rode direct to Avryl’s.

After another 2-3 hours of seasonal food and conversation we headed home to conclude quite a hard day!

My mileage for the day from and back to home was 15.

Sunday 1 January 2006, New Years Day Ride to the Black Horse Amberley.

There was a 10.30 start at Walberton Pond to allow for any late risers and sore heads.

Edwin led the ride joined by Sam, Gill, Christine, Anne and Jane. Alan and Liz went direct making 8 out on the day. Weather was dry but cloudy and milder than of late reaching about 8C.

The group took a standard route past the Spur and then the byroad via Madehurst to stop for elevenses at the Hikers cafe at Whiteways Lodge. Brian and Sue from Arun Adur joined us after a few minutes.

The ride continued with good views down to the Arun Valley and then a fast descent down Bury Hill before cutting across on the byroad to Houghton and then Amberley. There was a good pile of bikes outside with a good turnout from Arun Adur enabling us to take over the Bar.

A direct route was taken back via Houghton Hill and Walberton to complete a much needed ride after the Christmas excesses.

Sunday 18 December. Chichester Cross start. Tinsel Ride to the Winterton Arms, Crocker Hill
There were five of us for the start at Chichester Cross and another six at the railway station, all of the six on Moulton Bicycles, Diane & Brian, Zeffy & Linda from Hampshire and the two Brians from the I.O.W. a big thanks to them all for coming so far for our tinsel ride. The start was freezing, Sam informed us that his Bike Computer reading showed the temperature was a chilly Zero. The first attempt at a coffee stop - the Roman Palace - was closed, so off we set for the Yacht Basin via Fishbourne and Apuldram. We finally plucked up the courage to go back into the cold and headed for the lunch stop, first through Hunston then on to Runcton and Merston, crossing the A259 onto the cycle path towards Bognor turning off for Oving and dodging patches of ice on the way, from there to the Winterton Arms at Crocker Hill for lunch.

Harvey was already there with his group from Walberton pond. I think there were 22 of us altogether plus Dave and Jan the motorised contingent. At this point the temperature had risen to a sizzling 6 degrees C.

With Lindas helmet, Diane and her socks, Brian with his amazing tie and all our bikes done up in tinsel we made a very colourful sight, along with a few cheerful toots and waves along the way we had a smashing ride.

Sunday 18th December. Walberton Pond start. Tinsel ride to the Winterton Arms, Crocker Hill.
This ride was led by Harvey who was joined at the Pond by Phil and Mary, Alan and Liz, Gill, Mike and newcomer Emily. Eric, Adrian and Chris went direct to the Pub making 11 in all. Another 11 arrived at the Pub from the Chichester Cross start making a total of 22 out on the day.

Weather was very cold. Overnight it was -6C and about 0C at the Ride start rising later to the dizzy heights of +6C. However no ice was encountered and it was a beautifully clear blue sky.

Harvey led the group to Aldingbourne Country Centre Cafe for elevenses. Then a loop was taken on byroads via Eartham to Crocker Hill for lunch at the Winterton Arms. Arthur brought in the Chichester Group to help with the total takeover of the Bar seating. Edwin judged the bikes awarding the prize of a pack of Mince Pies for best decorated Bike to Lynn.

In the afternoon some made their way back direct but 17 rode as a combination of the 2 groups on backroads round to Goodwood Park and then the Goodwood Airfield Cafe for Tea.
